An award-winning designer, Paul Carstensen oversees Markstein’s in-house design team responsible for producing the majority of the agency’s graphic design, video and motion-graphic work for clients including Mayer, Encompass Health, Thompson Tractor Company and RxBenefits.
Prior to joining Markstein, Paul spent more than 16 years at Time Inc. art directing and designing magazines such as Southern Living, Lowe’s Creative Ideas and Health Magazine. He led the team that launched the tablet version of Southern Living, designing and overseeing the production of over 5,000 pages annually. Previously, Paul also oversaw the art direction, design and redesign of numerous high-profile national magazines like US Airways Attaché, Holiday Inn Express Navigator, Garden Design and Stanford University’s award-winning alumni magazine.
Paul has won over 100 national awards for design and art direction including honors from The Society of Publication Designers, Communication Arts, Print Magazine and American Illustration. He was named Designer of the Year by CASE (The Council for Advancement and Support of Education) for his art direction and design of Stanford Magazine.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from California State University, Hayward, where he graduated with honors.
