Every organization has a brand, whether it has invested in one or not. The only question is whether that brand was built on purpose or assembled by accident.
At Markstein, brand and creative work is where strategy meets design. It’s the foundation everything else stands on. A content calendar, a digital campaign, a recruiting push: none of it performs as well as it should if the brand underneath it is unclear, inconsistent or forgettable.
It’s easy to reduce brand work to a new logo or a fresh color palette. Real brand work goes deeper. It starts with the questions that are a little harder to answer:
From there, the work splits into two connected disciplines. Brand identity and visual design cover the look, feel and voice that show up everywhere, from a website to a trade show booth to a LinkedIn post. Employer brand development turns that same discipline inward, building the reputation that helps an organization attract and keep the right people.
Done well, both disciplines work together. A brand that looks sharp to customers but feels disconnected to employees is half a brand.
This is where seeing the work matters more than describing it. For Cahaba River Coalition, a full identity overhaul landed so well that David Butler told us the response to the new logo has been “overwhelmingly positive.” Good Jobs Birmingham needed an identity built specifically for workforce recruitment. The Birmingham-Jefferson County Port Authority needed a brand and digital presence that could carry a complex economic story.
Different organizations, different problems, the same approach: start with what that organization needs to be known for, then build the identity around it.
This post kicks off a series walking through Markstein’s core service areas: brand and creative, content and messaging, digital experiences, public affairs and media, and talent and workforce marketing. Each one solves a different problem, but they’re built to work together, the same way a strong brand is built to hold up under pressure. Curious what a fresh look at your brand might surface? Let’s talk.
